I can’t believe I almost forgot about this! I went for the Jimami Tofu 5D Dining Experience the week after STF and absolutely enjoyed it, but I also started my smartphone detox soon after and with my new reading speed (or rather, with the extra reading time I’ve found on my commute), I’ve been so busy just writing down my reviews of books that writing about this completely slipped my mind.
To make up for my oversight, I’ll spend this post gushing about Jimami Tofu because it’s such an amazing movie! To be honest, I signed up for the 5D Dining Experience because I love jimami tofu. It’s one of the foods I tried in Okinawa and it’s fantastic – I highly recommend it if you get a chance. So when I tried their Jimami Tofu at the SFF Media Preview, I knew that I wanted to go for this 5D Dining Experience, if only for the food. So I was pleasantly surprised when I found myself really enjoying the movie as well.
Jimami Tofu combines two things I love: My homeland and my adopted homeland. The film is set in Okinawa as Ryan, a Singaporean chef, searches for his ex-girlfriend. He ends up at the restaurant of a grumpy chef where he learns about Okinawa cooking and meets Nami, his ex-girlfriend’s best friend (yes, it gets complicated).
Apart from the mouthwatering food that appears on the screen and all the shots of Okinawa, I really enjoyed the characters. Midway through the movie, I leaned over to my friend (whom I convinced to come with me) and told her:
“I’m going to be so upset if Ryan and Nami don’t end up together.”
This means quite a bit, given that I’m normally not much of a romance person and would rather talk about food most of the time. But I loved the characters and I was really rooting for Ryan to get over his ex-girlfriend that suddenly disappeared on him and realise that Nami was the one.
I also thought that the 5D Dining Experience elevated the viewing experience. The whole point of this is that when food appears at key moments in the film, the same food is served to you. There are a total of eight courses served, spread out throughout the movie. As someone who enjoys Japanese food, I thought this was pretty worth it. Okinawa food is pretty hard to come by in Singapore and the food they serve was great.
Film-buffs will also appreciate the fact that this 5D Dining Experience also includes time for a Q&A with the directors, who double up as actors in the movie. I really enjoyed learning more about the film and the team behind it.
I’m sorry if this post is all over the place but I just get so excited whenever I think about the film and the food I had. This was a really fun experience and I cannot recommend it enough. If you’re interested in the Jimami Tofu 5D Dining Experience, there are two more dates this month! Else, you can watch it in Golden Villages’ theatres.
