The National Trust baking books are quickly turning into favourites for me because I’ve made another three things over the past couple of weeks from their Book of Afternoon Tea! I’ve previously posted about some of the recipes I’ve tried from them so here are some more recipe reviews*!
*Are these considered recipe reviews? Or am I just posting about these? Jury’s still out
Cheese and Marmite Scones
I don’t know how you eat marmite (if you eat marmite) but my family loves to have it on toast. I recently heard that some people put it in porridge? And I know of a friend who turns it into soup. But anyway, I love marmite and when I heard about cheese and marmite scones, I went out and got some cheddar!
The marmite milked smelled very strongly like marmite but you can’t actually taste it in the scones! I think the marmite just enhances the flavour of the cheese – personally, I found the scones very tasty but some in my family thought it was too salty, so your millage may vary with this one.
Bakewell Tarts
This was my first time making frangipane and I was so pleased that it went well, especially since the last recipe I attempted that had almonds did not go well. The book suggests using ready-made pastry crusts but because the local supermarket did not have that, I used the pastry recipe from Dining with Mr Darcy and that worked pretty well.
My family actually really liked the frangipane plain, so I might make some frangipane cupcakes in the future. Is that a thing?
Victoria Sandwich
This is this weekend’s bake! I’ve been wanting to try a Victoria Sandwich because being stuck at home means I can’t go to the M&S bakery and buy a victoria sandwich there.
I found these to be really easy to make and the plain cake was really delicious! I made half of these sandwiched with jam and half sandwiched with jam and freshly whipped cream. Personally, I prefer the version with cream but my family likes the cake best, so I may just make this as a plain cake in the future (and turn my portion into a Victoria sandwich).
All three of these Book of Afternoon Tea recipes worked out great! The only downside the National Trust recipe books that I can see is that they do not lay flat. So it does get a bit troublesome if I have to refer to the recipe more than once. Other than that, I’m really loving the recipes and there are so many more that I want to try! I should give the rest of my books a fair shake, though, so I think the next time I post about baking, it will be from another book.
Those look delicious! And I love your pictures <3
Thank you!! They were great snacks to go with books (:
All these baking posts are too tempting not to click in :’) As usual, your baking looks fantastic and it does motivate me to look up for recipes! I hope you’ll find more things you enjoy baking in the future! *ignores stomach growling
These are pretty easy, would definitely recommend! If you don’t have the book (I think the NLB has copies?), BBC Good Food is a great alternative!!
I’ll try finding a copy, but thanks for letting me know where else to find recipes! It can be overwhelming online when there are loads of websites claiming to be the “most amazing xxx”!
I know what you mean!! Generally, I’m finding BBC Good Food to be pretty easy to follow, as well as the National Trust Books! Their Book of Afternoon Tea has the an amazing brownie recipe too!
The brownie recipe is also available here and it’s the same one as in my copy: https://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/recipes/chocolate-brownies
