We’re almost at the end of my self-declared month of rereading! And there are still so many books that I want to read. But, I went to the library last week and got four books, so I’ve gotta start on the new books soon. Anyway, here’s what I’ve read over the last few days:
- I finished The Glass of Time by Michael Cox and it was very satisfying! It’s a sequel to The Meaning of Night, and basically the injustice that occurred in The Meaning of Night was more or less righted. Warren asked me if I thought it was meant to be a sequel – I think the story, as it is, is complete, but I think that Cox left room for a third book in the future (looking at the disappearance of one important character).
- Four more chapters of The Tale of Genji!! I’m so proud of myself for doing this! Genji’s in his prime right now, but to be honest I’m reading mostly for the women characters in the book. Despite the fact that multiple lovers are very common in Heian Japan, the Akashi lady and Murasaki display jealousy. I think Murasaki’s case is especially striking because she was brought up by Genji to be the perfect lady. To me, it indicates that this polyamory might not have been something that women wanted – but something that came about because the men in society wanted it.
Since we only have two days left in the month, I think I’ll be focusing on The Tale of Genji and my current read, Descendant of the Crane. Besides, the past weekend was really tiring (but, on the other hand, I finished another live translation event!) so it’s going to take some time before I have the mental capacity to read a lot at one go.
Also, small blog announcement – there’ll be just one instead of two tea-related posts this week, since I’m cutting down on caffeine (if anyone has tisane recommendations for acid reflux, please send them my way).
Yes, I agree that Cox gave himself room to continue the story. Too bad he died before he could accomplish that! His personal story was almost as interesting and tragic as the books!
Yes, it’s a pity we will never know his plans for the story (if he wanted to continue it or not)! But thanks again for the recommendation!
Fingers crossed you manage to finish Genji!!
