Tea Review: Lemonade by Lupicia

After a long time, I’m back with a Lupicia tea review! I was originally going to review a Lupicia Rooibos Fruit of the Season blend but the rooibos smelled sour in a bad way and since the tea is supposed to be chestnut flavoured, I decided that I was not going to drink that. So I opened up a different packet of tea – Lemonade.

The description on the packet was pretty straightforward: they blended the taste of lemon with black tea and they recommend serving this either hot or cold.

First Impressions

Looking at the dry leaves, I’m guessing the quality of the tea isn’t the best, which I guess can be expected for a flavoured tea? The dry leaves do have a strong lemon scent, which bodes well, or at least better than the rooibos.

Tasting Notes

Since they recommended it hot or cold, I decided to brew it two ways. The first is the traditional way – using freshly boiled water. Despite the small size of the dry leaf, the tea liquor was fairly light (I imagined something like a builder’s brew for some reason) and easy to drink straight. The tea isn’t sour, but it does taste like lemon. The only downside was that for some reason, there was a bit of a ‘musty’ aftertaste.

My second batch of tea was cold-brewed overnight, using the Hario tea bottle that seems pretty ubiquitous in Singapore (I’ve seen so many tea shops carry it). The cold brew tea liquor looked much lighter than the one brewed with hot water and it tasted nicer too – a gentle lemon tea with no unpleasant aftertaste.

Overall Thoughts

I’ve pretty much fallen out of the habit of drinking flavoured tea, since all my past few teas have been straight teas, but this was a pretty nice change! I don’t think I’ll reach for it very often, but it’s definitely something that I’d be serving friends when they visit.
