Some time ago, I did a quick review of two Renegade Teas that I tried with my friend. Today, I want to bring you a slightly more detailed review of an oolong that I tried recently!
Here is the tea description from Renegade Tea’s website:
“This oolong has the perfect balance between the silky nature of black tea and the freshness of green tea with some floral hints in it. The slight astringent aftertaste is just the attitude of Miss Ohh Long that she shows from time to time.”
First Impressions
The dry leaves are short, dark, and twisted thinly. It smells woody, and reminds me more of a black tea than an oolong, which should prove interesting.
Tasting Notes
The first steep produced a golden tea liquor that had a slight floral scent. I steeped this tea for about 1 minute and it produced a sweet and floral cup of tea. There were slight woody notes, as the dry leaves hinted at, but the sweetness and the floral notes were definitely the main ones for me.
The second steep was very much like the first, and notable mostly because it was here that I realised what this tea reminded me of – floral wakoucha such as those made from the Benifuuki and Yumewakaba (I really need to get my hands on more yumewakaba black tea).
This tea didn’t really change much over the course of my tea session. It remained sweet and floral and really more like a light black tea than an oolong for me. I got four steeps out of my tea session, but I think three is optimal – the tea from the fourth steep was extremely light!
I took a look at the spent leaves as well – it’s mostly brown with some green bits. I guess that shows that it wasn’t completely oxidised (makes sense since it’s an oolong), which makes the fact that it reminded me of a black tea even more interesting.
Final Thoughts
This was a delicious tea! It probably helped that I made this at home instead of outside – a look at my previous post reminded me that I found their black tea better when brewed at home. I actually brought this for my friend to try but we didn’t have enough time; a real pity because I would have liked her to try this!
I had not heard of Renegade Tea and the review was very good. I used to like Oolong tea when I was a tea reviewer; don’t do much of that now. Thank you for sharing!
Thank you for reading! Renegade does green and black teas too, if you drink that!
Okay but I LOVE that you can see the detailing in the cup through the tea!!!
Right??? I really missed this cup when I was away!
