Book Review: A Man Called Ove by Fredrik Backman

Well, this book has been very popular for a long time now and I finally read it, thanks to my boyfriend’s mum who loaned me her copy! I can see why A Man Called Ove is popular – it’s a heartwarming tear-jerker, very much like a feel-good movie.

Ove, the titular character in this novel, is a grumpy and grieving old man. After he loses his job and thus has nothing else to do, he decides to kill himself. Unfortunately, his attempts at committing suicide are always interrupted by his new neighbours, who ask him to help with moving, fixing radiators, etc. Through these, Ove’s (unwillingly) pulled into his community and we also get to learn more about his past.

In a way, this book is exactly what you’d expect. It seems designed to pull at your heartstrings and includes a variety of characters that all come together. But despite the book being obviously written to make me cry, I still teared up at several sections, mostly those about Ove and his wife because they were too sweet.

Honestly, I don’t have much to say about this book. It was fairly predictable but it got the job done – I enjoyed getting to know Ove and his community a little better and I really enjoyed seeing Ove come out of his shell.

  1. I watched the movie adaptation starring Tom Hanks and really liked it. It too pulled at the heartstrings and made my eyes leak. Sounds like itโ€™s true to the book.

  2. I almost read this one time, but out of the giant stack of books I had brought home from the library that day, it never made it. Maybe I will get to it some day. Sounds like something my husband would like.

  3. I really enjoyed this book and am glad you liked it. I loved Parvaneh especially. I have seen both movie versions and enjoyed them as well–although the book is way better. Of course. ๐Ÿ™‚
