Everything to do with books! Mostly book reviews, but occasionally, I have the non-review bookish post too.
I have finally read the unabridged version! It took quite a while to find, but I finally got a library copy of the Arthur Waley translation. I couldn’t decide which translation to buy, or even if I wanted an unabridged translation to keep so I went for whatever the library had first. The Waley translation… Read More The Tale of Genji (Unabridged Version) translated by Arthur Waley
Overwhelmed is one of those books that I came across by accident. I was visiting the new library@haborfront when I saw this being displayed. I’ve been feeling tired lately and the thought that it might because of I’m overwhelmed rather than being in a depressive state was a nice one (jury’s still out on which… Read More Overwhelmed by Brigid Schulte
I heard about this book from a recent episode of The Indicator and it sounded interesting enough that I went out and immediately borrowed it. Although I’ve been a bit skeptical of personal finance books since reading Pound Foolish, the advice here is pretty different. First though, let me tell you who I think this… Read More The Dumb Things Smart People Do With Their Money by Jill Schlesinger
One nice thing about no longer being the only bookworm in the family is that it’s easier to go to book sales. I was intrigued by the Books Box Sale, but since it was all the way in AMK and book sales generally aren’t suited to public transport (I can’t carry that many books back),… Read More Books Box Sale Haul!
As you might have guessed, this is a book I borrowed in preparation for the upcoming family trip. I haven’t been to Scotland before and it’s not a country I know a lot about so I thought I’d start by reading about their national dress. Scottish Tartan and Highland Dress is a pretty tiny book… Read More Scottish Tartan and Highland Dress by Fiona MacDonald
It’s probably not a secret that I love eBooks – in fact, in 2018, almost half the books I read were ebooks. But I realised that I haven’t really talked about how or why I fell in love with ebooks, so here’s my experience and thoughts on the matter. First, my credentials & history as… Read More How I Fell In Love with eBooks
This was a Christmas read that I put off reading for the past three months because… I didn’t want to finish it (and hence couldn’t start it). It’s a silly reason, but I guess I really enjoy the anticipation of having an unread book on a topic I love in the house. Empire of Tea… Read More Empire of Tea by Markman Ellis, Richard Coulton, and Matthew Mauger
I found this while browsing through the travel guides at the library and it sounded like a unique way to get to know the Lake District. The whole premise is that the writer and his son spend nine days cycling around the Lake District. It’s not a place that’s new to them, but it’s a… Read More A Lake District Grand Tour by Mike Carden
I really enjoyed The Invisible Library, the first book of this series, but for some reason, I put off reading The Masked City until now. Of course, I’m asking myself “why” because this was a really fun read. The Masked City takes place sometime after The Invisible Library. Irene is now Librarian-in-Residence of an alternate… Read More The Masked City
I’ve always said that the reason of the SEA Reading Challenge was to find more mystery, fantasy, and other genre books set in SEA and by SEA authors. So when I heard about Dangerous Island, I knew that it fit the bill, even if I was a bit older than the target audience. Dangerous Island… Read More Dangerous Island by Maranna Chan
