Ette’s Nasi Lemak Tea

I originally planned to review Ette’s Nasi Lemak tea and Ice Kacang tea together but somehow… I LOST THE ICE KACANG TEA! I don’t even know how that happened and I searched my tea cupboard twice but I still can’t find it. So I guess today, I’m just talking about the Nasi Lemak Tea.

Nasi Lemak isn’t your typical tea flavour and, to be honest, if this wasn’t a gift I might not have tried it. The description on its page does make it sound pretty good though:

Rasa Sayang Hei! Nasi Lemak tea blend is inspired by the staple fragrant dish cooked in coconut milk & pandan leaf commonly found in Singapore, Malaysia & neighbouring countries.

Nasi Lemak tea is a fragrant rice blend of houjicha, genmaicha, coconut flakes, dried pandan, dried chilli & flavouring.

The recommended brewing time is 3 to 4 minutes and they recommend using 200ml of water for 2 grams of tea.

When I tried this tea, I was immediately reminded of Ette’s Mango Sticky Rice, which is the other flavoured tea I’ve tried (I’ve also tried their Hotel Chamomile but that’s clearly a different type of tea). The tea smelled like coconut and tasted of pandan, which was definitely very pleasant but not exactly what nasi lemak tastes like.

I was told that this tasted better cold-brewed, so I tried it that way too. The cold brewed version definitely has a slightly more savoury smell and taste (I was reminded of ikan bilis for some reason) but the dominant taste is still pandan. And even though there’s supposed to be dried chilli in the tea, it wasn’t spicy at all.

Overall, the most interesting part of the tea was probably its name. It’s pretty nice if you like pandan, but it doesn’t really remind me of nasi lemak. That said, I do know people that like this (and they prefer this to the Ice Kacang tea) so if you think this tea sounds good, definitely give it a try.

What do you think?
