Book Review: The Mysterious Benedict Society and the Perilous Journey by Trenton Lee Stewart

I finally managed to get a copy of the second book in the Mysterious Benedict Society (thanks to a student) and it was just as fun as I expected!

The Mysterious Benedict Society and the Perilous Journey starts with a reunion – Reynie, Sticky, Kate, and Constance are preparing for an exciting and safe adventure with Mr Benedict. Unfortunately, just before the trip, Mr Benedict and Number Two get kidnapped. To save their mentor, the four children must follow the clues left by Mr Benedict and find… whatever it is he was after.

It was fun seeing the four again. Reynie, Kate, and Sticky are mostly the same, but I really liked seeing the changes in Constance. She was two in the first book and she’s three and a half here, so she’s developed a few more abilities. She’s just as contrary as ever, but I felt that she has grown up a little more compared to the first book.

The story was also very fun. The premise is a bit more incredulous than the first book – you have to believe that Mr Benedict’s original adventure was the key to finding him – but the adventure flows very smoothly and the resolution was convincing.

I can see why my students enjoy this series; I’m definitely enjoying it myself. Constance was a brat in the first book but she had the most growth in this one, so I’m really looking forward to seeing how she develops in the next book in this series.
