Book Review: The House at Pooh Corner by A. A. Milne

I am here with another children’s classic that I’ve finally read. After a really good experience with Moominpappa at Sea, I remembered that I had a copy of The House at Pooh Corner that I bought at the end of last year and never got around to reading.

This one was… tricky. Winnie the Pooh is such a beloved Disney franchise (and I see Pooh and friends everywhere) that even though I never read the books, I went in with the expectation that I already knew the characters. Well, I was wrong. Owl here is a little sillier and less wise than I expected, and Rabbit nearly wasn’t so grumpy as I remembered. That said, Eeyore and Tigger were the same, and so was Pooh and Piglet.

Was the book charming? Well, I think I would have liked it more as a child. What caught my attention was that Pooh and friends felt like the type of animals that you’d expect a young child to make up and play with. It felt like I was talking to my young nieces and nephews when they are telling me about the games they play. So in that sense, I think children will really identify with this story. As for me… I’m not sure. I’m actually more curious in The Tao of Pooh than anything because I want to know how that book found lots of deep meaning in the Pooh stories.

Overall, this was a quick and pleasant read. It didn’t really standout the way Moomin did, but I can definitely see myself recommending this to younger readers that I know!

  1. I don’t remember ever reading these books, although that’s happened before with other early-age reads, so I think I might have to delve into this adorable classic at some point!

What do you think?
