I can’t remember where I first heard about this book and that’s a real pity because I really enjoyed this and would want to message/comment on that person’s post to tell them thank you! And also that the book scared me so much.
Also, I started typing out this review and realised that I spoiled one part of the story (nothing major but it’s about the character relationships so I want to talk about it), so skip this post if you want to be kept in the dark.
The Whisper Man starts with the abduction of a little boy. He is, unfortunately, not the main character so you know things are not going to end well for him. The focus of this book is on three people:
- Jake, a sensitive little boy with a special imaginary friend
- Tom, his father and a writer struggling to cope after the death of his with
- Pete, a detective who has spent the last 20 years working the Whisper Man serial killings and who also happens to be Tom’s estranged father.
Tom and Jake have moved to Featherbank, where they hope to make a new start. But Featherbank hides a dark past and the abduction of a little boy has brought it to light – the legend of the Whisper Man. The Whisper Man, or Francis Carter, was a serial killer who whispered at the windows of his potential victims to lure them out. But Francis is in jail, so who is behind this most recent abduction?
Honestly, it was so hard to put this book down, even though I didn’t really want to read it at night because it was pretty scary. For some reason, the legend of the Whisper Man got to me and my heart was in my mouth for most of the book. I could kind of see how Tom and Jake were going to be involved in The Whisper Man story, but I did not figure out how it happened, which is why I couldn’t put the book down after a certain point.
Apart from the mystery, I really appreciated how connected the main characters are. Tom and Jake share a tense yet loving relationship, and I was really rooting for them to be able to find happiness from the start of the book. I also thought Pete was a really interesting character and I thought the way the book revealed more about his and Tom’s relationship was really well-down. Both men became more and more human and sympathetic and I really loved how we got to see two generations of father-son relationships from these three characters.
Overall, I really enjoyed this book! It’s definitely creepy (at least for me) and very thrilling. Everything was great – plot, pacing, and characters, so I would definitely recommend it to people who love mysteries and thrillers.
