Getting a SIM Card in France (without a French Bank Account)

Hi friends!

Just a quick post today because I feel like getting a new phone number in a new country is a big achievement (at least it was for me back when I was in Japan).

So I’ve not gotten my phone number for the past week and a half because I heard that you need a French bank account to set it up and I’ve not set mine up yet. But then I heard from someone that if you use Free mobile, you could get a SIM card without a bank account and it’s true! (note: I talked to a different friend and she pointed out that if you also need internet for your house, you definitely need a French bank account)

I went to the Free store at Jean Medicin and the staff, who could speak English, helped me get a new SIM card. All I needed was a credit card that could be charged and to know my physical address when putting in the details. It was all honestly very easy and I think I finished everything in 10 minutes.

Plus, I realised that the plans in France are really cheap! Or at least they are when on a campaign. I chose a promotion plan that’s about 8.99 euros a month and it comes with 90GB of data – this is so much cheaper than in Singapore. There was a fee of 10 euros for a new SIM card, so my total initial payment was 18.99 euros which I still think is very reasonable.

Apart from getting a new SIM card, I also managed to go to Nice’s Castle Hill this weekend and it had some pretty incredible views, so I’m uploading a few pictures here too.

  1. I am glad you were able to get a new SIM card so easily. That does sound like a great price. Thank you for sharing more lovely photos!

  2. I know I’m commenting really late, but I’m trying to get a French phone number and Free mobile asks for my bank’s IBAN and BIC, which I don’t have since it’s not a French bank. Any way around this? I’m trying to do it online but I’m having trouble. Any advice would be so appreciated! Thank you!

    1. Hi, if there’s a free near you, perhaps you can try going to the store? That’s how I got my sim card without a french bank account – there’s a kiosk in the store and all it required was my credit card info.

      1. Thank you so much!! I really appreciate your reply. I was able to use my grandfather’s SIM card, so it’s all good for now.

What do you think?
