Emma is a lot longer than I remembered so I’m only halfway through it today! I must say, knowing what is going to happen is making more more anxious than not knowing what to happen – [SPOILERS AHEAD] I know, for example, that Frank Churchill and Jane Fairfax are secretly engaged, so every time Emma thinks that she’s in love with him and vice versa I want to shake her by the shoulders and tell her it’s all a lie.
Oddly enough, I don’t get this tense when I’m rereading mysteries, perhaps I’m too interesting in picking up clues missed the first time around?
Miss Bates is as annoying as I remember. As much respect I have for Austen’s skill at using dialogue to draw out her character, I am with Emma in feeling that too long in Miss Bate’s company is tiring.
I believe I shall have more to say tomorrow – it’s the weekend and I want to read as much as possible!
One of the reasons I love rereading Emma is to see all the clues I missed during my first read! Every time I am impressed by how clever Austen is!
Yes! I just finished it and I was like “how did I not notice Mr Knightley’s regard for her on my first reading?”
I love Emma. Such a good book.
It is!
