Finally Read: Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone by J. K. Rowling

I am majorly late to join the “Have Read Harry Potter” group but here I am! The books were so popular by the time I heard about them that I didn’t dare touch the books in case I didn’t enjoy them. Plus, I pretty much knew all the major plot points just by listening to what people were saying. But since unlimited copies of the first book are now available on Overdrive, I thought it was time to finally read it.

There’s no need to talk about the plot but if you are like me, the first book in the Harry Potter series has our protagonist find out that he’s a wizard, join the prestigious Hogwarts School, and uncover a plot to steal the very powerful philosopher’s stone in order to raise Voldemort from the dead.

So this was a quick and fun read. I don’t know if it’s because I’m reading it now, but while I enjoyed it, I’m not exactly fangirling over it. Harry, Ron, Hermoine, Hagrid, and Neville were interesting characters and I thought it was cool to see the magical system that Rowling created.

I am getting Chronicles of Pydrain vibes from this, and I went from “yup I enjoy it” at The Book of Three to “This was AMAZING, I love it!” by The High King, the last book in the series, so if the Harry Potter series continues to get better, I think it’s very possible that I will become a fangirl by the end. So stay tuned, I guess?

(Next hurdle: Getting a copy of the second book because I’m not at the stage where I feel like I must buy it, and it’s pretty popular in the library system.)

  1. It’s interesting and very refreshing to read a post where instead of “x is like Harry Potter” we have “Harry Potter is like x”. I’ve not come across Chronicles of Pydrain before, either. Glad you enjoyed the book, good luck getting hold of Chamber of Secrets!

    1. Thanks! I’ve got a few books in my TBR list to get through first, but I’m sure I’ll get to Chamber of Secrets eventually!

  2. The series gets so much better and more complex as you get further in. I thought the first book was just “light and fun,” but it gets very engrossing, especially when you hit books 3 or 4. I don’t think I ever finished the Prydain series, for some weird reason, although I loved reading Lloyd Alexander as a teenager. I’ll have to return to those!

    1. The Prydain serious gets a lot deeper towards the end as well! It’s very fun. Can’t wait to continue reading this series!

What do you think?
