Book Review: Daisy Darker by Alice Feeney

I got this book from Tanvi (@tanvisreadventures on Instagram) at a book swap and I’m so glad I did!

Daisy Darker is a mystery-thriller inspired by one of Christie’s mysteries (I won’t say which one because it will be a spoiler). When Daisy Darker and her family visit her grandmother for her 80th birthday, all of them expect to be cut off when the tide comes in. It’s not Daisy’s favourite thing, since everyone has been ignoring her after one fateful incident in the past, but she is there because she loves her grandmother. What they don’t expect is for her grandmother to announce the contents of her will and then be murdered. And the murderer isn’t stopping at one…

Personally, I found this to be a really clever mystery, but more so for the ending. The middle actually felt a bit draggy because most of Daisy’s family isn’t very likeable and I wasn’t too anxious about them dying. I pretty much perked up towards the end, when we discover what happened to make Daisy ignored by her family. I really enjoyed the double reveal and found tears pricking at my eyes during the last few chapters.

As I mentioned, most of Daisy’s family isn’t very likeable. I liked Nana, Daisy’s eccentric grandmother because of how Daisy remembers her, and Daisy was a sympathetic protagonist, though I did side-eye some of her actions. While her niece Trixie was a great favourite with Daisy, her character wasn’t too present until the end. The rest of the family just gave me rather strange vibes; I wasn’t quite sure if they loved each other or not.

Overall, this was a fun and twisty mystery. While my interest did drop a little in the middle, I thought the book had a strong start and ending and that managed to sustain my entire reading experience.

  1. I haven’t tried anything by Alice Feeney but her books seem well liked. I like that this one is inspired by a Christie novel. I’ll have to give it a try.

What do you think?
