Everything to do with books! Mostly book reviews, but occasionally, I have the non-review bookish post too.
I have no idea how long social media and the idea of influencers will last (forever? for a few more years?) but the idea of reading a thriller based on influencers was intriguing. Now, I really hated the ending of Hello Sunshine, another book based on social media stars, but I was cautiously optimistic about… Read More Book Review: Unfollow Me by Charlotte Duckworth
The Japanese Discovery of Chinese Fiction is one of the library’s latest ebook acquisitions and hence featured in the “new arrivals” section. That section is also pretty prominent in the Overdrive app, which is how I found, and promptly downloaded, the book. It’s not The Tale of Genji, but I thought it might be interesting… Read More Book Review: The Japanese Discovery of Chinese Fiction by William C Hedberg
I’m not quite sure how I found this book but I was in the mood for a thriller and this sounded interesting. The Chestnut Man is about a serial killer who hacks off his victim’s limbs and leaves a little chestnut doll behind. As detectives Thulin and Hess investigate, they realise that this crime may… Read More Book Review: The Chestnut Man by Søren Sveistrup
In a new series entitled “Bookstagram Made Me Read It”, I read The Inimitable Jeeves by P.G. Wodehouse! To backtrack in time a little, I stumbled across a copy of Jeeves in the Yule-tide Spirit in the library last November. At the same time, I found the Four Weeks of Wodehouse challenge on Instagram. I… Read More The Inimitable Jeeves by P.G. Wodehouse
Death on the Nile is a Hercule Poirot story and one that I have reread often. Spoilers galore in this post because I’m going to be focusing on the characters so skip this if you haven’t read the book! Although the mystery takes place on the Nile, it starts in England when the beautiful, rich,… Read More Re-Reading Christie: Female Characters in Death on the Nile
水浒传, translated into English as ‘Water Margin’, is considered to be one of the Four Great Novels of Chinese literature. It is, along with Dream of the Red Chamber, also one of the two that I know very little about (although I now know a bit more about Dream of the Red Chamber thanks to… Read More Book Review: Water Margin by Shi Nai'an Translated by J.H. Having enjoyed the first two books in the series, The Two Mrs. Abbotts was already on my TBR list. And when Ami from Luvtoread reviewed it, it felt like a sign that I should move the book up the list. So the next time I popped by the Central Library (which is one of the… Read More The Two Mrs. Abbotts by D. E. Stevenson
So this was something recommended in the self-help talk at the NLB (I really should sign up for more talks) and since I really enjoyed Digital Minimalism, I decided to read this. Plus, I tend to get a bit reflective around December (or any other trigger, really), and I thought it would be nice to… Read More Deep Work by Cal Newport
I normally try to read the Fairacre series in order, but when I saw this, I knew that it had to be read in the Christmas season. Christmas with Miss Read is a collection of stories that are, in some way, linked to Christmas. Some of them, I think I’ve already read (The Fairacre Ghost… Read More Christmas with Miss Read
I found out about this book from the Public Libraries Singapore’s Instagram and could not resist picking this up. While my English has been steadily getting worse (I used to think that it’s because my brain was replacing it with Japanese but clearly this is not the case anymore), I still enjoy reading about the… Read More The Accidental Dictionary by Paul Anthony Jones
