Everything to do with books! Mostly book reviews, but occasionally, I have the non-review bookish post too.
I’ve wanted to read Annie Dillard for a few years but I’ve always been unable to find a physical copy. Luckily, I was recently inspired to look for her in Overdrive and I realised that the NLB has added a few of her books! I immediately borrowed Pilgrim at Tinker Creek, which I hear is… Read More Book Review: Pilgrim at Tinker Creek by Annie Dillard
It should be pretty obvious that I like fairytales and folklore. So when I heard about this book on Netgalley, I was immediately intrigued. It’s supposed to be a comprehensive resource on all things about the Good People and it definitely delivers. Organised alphabetically (duh!), A New Dictionary of Fairies covers subjects like Elf-Shot and… Read More Book Review: A New Dictionary of Fairies by Morgan Daimler
I kind of went into this book knowing that it was going to change the way I was thinking about clothes and I was right. I heard about Fashionopolis from the Dressed Podcast interview (which was great, except for an advert for Fabletics that felt out of place) and knew that this was going to… Read More Book Review: Fashionopolis by Dana Thomas
One thing that I’ve discovered (and am really enjoying) about bookstagram are the challenges! There was the Wodehouse one which I missed, the 2019 Agatha Christie one which I also missed, and this 2020 Agatha Christie one which I am determined to participate in as much as possible! It’s a book a month, which I… Read More Book Review: Sparkling Cyanide by Agatha Christie
Rereading Silence at the start of the year reminded me that there are a lot of books by Endo that I haven’t read. There’s quite a lot there hasn’t been translated, but I found a copy of The Final Martyrs in the library and decided to make that my first Endo Short Story read (I… Read More Book Review: The Final Martyrs by Endo Shusaku
I finally managed to get a copy of the second book in the Mysterious Benedict Society (thanks to a student) and it was just as fun as I expected! The Mysterious Benedict Society and the Perilous Journey starts with a reunion – Reynie, Sticky, Kate, and Constance are preparing for an exciting and safe adventure… Read More Book Review: The Mysterious Benedict Society and the Perilous Journey by Trenton Lee Stewart
In the spirit of embracing what bookstagram has to offer, I borrowed another book that I found on the platform. This was from BookandBriefcase’s post and I basically decided to read this after she mentioned that the author was a New Testament scholar who used what he knew in the book. As the title suggests,… Read More Book Review: The Lost Letters of Pergamum by Bruce W. Longenecker
I could talk about how libraries work as an avenue for serendipitous discovery of books but I won’t because this review is going to be a paean to the golden age of mysteries. Or at least, it would be if I could write paeans. The Golden Age of Murder, on the other hand, is a… Read More The Golden Age of Murder by Martin Edwards
I found this while searching for an unrelated Jane Austen book but I am a sucker for Jane Austen-related books (I suppose I can call myself a Janeite?) and so decided to hunt down this book. But, I also just checked Goodreads and it as it turns out, I’ve already read the book! That said,… Read More Book Review: A Jane Austen Education by William Deresiewicz
I stumbled on this in the library but since I loved Galileo (which was based on his books), I decided that I had to read it. It’s been some time since I read Japanese fiction translated into English, but I think I’ve been missing out. Malice is a murder mystery about the murder of bestselling… Read More Book Review: Malice by Higashino Keigo
