Everything to do with books! Mostly book reviews, but occasionally, I have the non-review bookish post too.
Wodehouse is fast becoming a comfort read, along with Miss Read’s series of books. But while I read Miss Read for the charm of old-time rural England, Wodehouse appeals for the sense of humour that suffuses his works. Joy in the Morning has Bertie Wooster endeavouring to evade marriage (again) and the wrath of his… Read More Book Review: Joy in the Morning by P.G. Wodehouse
Pretty much everyone around me who reads has raved about Billion Dollar Whale online. But it’s popular status also means that it’s been hard to grab a copy in the library (or perhaps I’m just lucky). So when I saw the ecopy in Overdrive, I decided to download it and woah, this is basically Crazy… Read More Book Review: Billion Dollar Whale by Tom Wright & Bradley Hope
I first heard about The Night Parade when Wendy at Literary Feline reviewed it … in 2016. Yes, this has been on my TBR list for four years! But it’s about Obon and Japanese culture so I was definitely going to read it sooner or later. In The Night Parade, Saki is dragged from her… Read More Book Review: The Night Parade by Kathryn Tanquary
This will be, I hope, the start of a new series. One of the things I planned to do more of this year was to read in Japanese, and I had the perfect opportunity when I was given a stack of books for the World of Genji project. It was pretty hard to decide what… Read More Reading in Japanese: Family and Sex in the Middle Ages by Takahashi Hideki (中世の家と性）
I’m not a big poetry fan because it’s hard for me to understand but I am a fan of pretty things and I could not resist these books! Obvious State is publishing a series of books where they pair certain poems or text with images and the end result is just gorgeous! I backed the… Read More Kickstarter: Poetry books from Obvious State
It took me some time to get to Harsh Lessons, but once I started reading, I couldn’t put this down. The second book in the Leeth Dossier series, Harsh Lessons has our heroine (was Sara, now Leeth) move out of the Institute for Paranormal Dysfunction to a covert government agency where she has to learn… Read More Book Review: Harsh Lessons by L. J. Kendall
This is pretty rare but I borrowed this book because of the author. I’ve heard of Tony Gebely’s tea-rating website Tea Epicure, which meant that I was curious to see what he had to say about tea. The Philosophy of Tea is a slim volume that manages to pack a lot of information about tea.… Read More Books about Tea: The Philosophy of Tea by Tony Gebely
The Golden Age of Murder convinced me that I need to read more Golden Age mystery authors that are not Agatha Christie, so I decided to look for some Josephine Tey (also, my library doesn’t have Anthony Berkeley so I will have to find his books in a bookstore which will take some time). I’ve… Read More Book Review: A Shilling for Candles by Josephine Tey
I’ve got to admit, I was drawn to the cover of the book when I first saw it in the library. The synopsis sealed the deal because it sounded like historical fantasy. And while Rotherweird wasn’t quite like what I thought it was, I really enjoyed this. Rotherweird is a town within England that isn’t… Read More Book Review: Rotherweird by Andrew Caldecott
Fashionopolis, as you might expect, was eye-opening. Apart from talking about my book to everyone around me (probably annoying my taobao-loving friends and family), I also did a mini-reading binge and found these three books to be very helpful. Fashionopolis: Read this for an introduction to the ethical and ecological problems facing fashion Published just… Read More 3 Books to Change the Way You See Fashion
