Hey friends, I’m writing this a bit early because I’ll be headed off for a trip soon and I won’t get back till sometime in October, and given my energy levels nowadays, I probably won’t have a blogpost up until mid-to-late October (though I will likely make a few substack posts as I blog from… Read More Not a September ’24 in Review post
In my previous tea post, I talked about the San-Cha Darjeeling tea that I had bought on my trip to India (all the way back in July). But after writing it, I realised that I still had a few packets of the Darjeeling tea by Chayurveda – this was part of a box of various… Read More Comparing Teabag vs Loose Leaf Darjeeling (that I bought in an airport)
Some time last year, I did a bit of a binge read on the Influencer Industry (and I rounded up my thoughts in this post) so when I saw The Influencer Industry, I couldn’t resist picking it up. While a bit more academic than the other influencer-focused books that I read, The Influencer Industry provided… Read More Book Review: The Influencer Industry by Emily Hund
Picture this, I’m at Delhi International Airport, extremely tired because I didn’t realise that weddings in India last till 3am and I booked a 8am flight (we went straight from wedding venue to hotel just to pick up our bags and to the airport). There’s only one more flight home and in my sleep-deprived mind,… Read More Tea Review: Darjeeling Chardonnay by San-Cha
I was at the library when I came across The Big Four and thought “hold on, an Hercule Poirot mystery that I’ve never read?”. I’m used to not having read Miss Marple, given that I focused on the Poirot mysteries when I was younger, so it was a shock to see a Poirot book that… Read More Book Review: The Big Four by Agatha Christie

But that’s the future and this post is for the past so let’s look back at August. August in Books August was… Read More August 2024 in Review
Yesterday, I talked a bit about finding out that some of my childhood rhymes had overseas roots and the surprise that it was. Today, I’d like to share some more rhymes; these should be more local, and I’ve categorised them according to when they were heard/shared. The original rhymes are presented with the English translation… Read More Singapore Folklore #2: A Collection of Schoolyard Rhymes
Starting school around the turn of the century meant several things: a cool 2000 Micky Mouse notebook (beginning my lifelong habit of never finishing a notebook I started writing in), a longstanding question about which century exactly it was (which never got answered because I never bothered to ask), and of course, school. There were… Read More Singapore Folklore #1: Schoolyard Rhymes from Overseas
I chanced upon this book while browsing online and because I cannot resist a folktale collection (and more importantly, because I do not own any folktale books from Korea), I decided to pick it up! A Purse Full of Tales is a collection of twenty one folk tales from both North and South Korea. Apparently,… Read More Book Review: A Purse Full of Tales by Chan Young Kim and David Carter
“Myths are the darkest and brightest incarnations of who we are. They slip into our dreams and underpin our reality.” I can’t quite remember how I found The Library of Legends but I was swept away by this heartbreaking novel that expertly melded historical fiction and folklore. Set in 1937, during the second Sino-Japanese war,… Read More Book Review: The Library of Legends by Janie Chang
