Deeds of Men by Marie Brennan

I enjoyed Midnight Never Come so much that I immediately looked into the second and third books in the series. Unfortunately, the second and third books are set hundreds of years after the first one (and the library doesn’t have book two), so I’m not sure if I’m going to continue the series. I did, however, also find out that there’s a novella with Deven and Lune, so I ended up buying that.

Deeds of Men takes place years after the events of Midnight Never Come. Deven is growing old, even though he doesn’t look like it. And although he and Lune don’t really want to face that time, they have to find a replacement for him. A Prince that can represent the mortal world and help the faerie court gather information about the mortal one. However, Deven’s choice and protege, Henry Ware is murdered and Deven must find out who did it. If not for the safety of the court, then for justice for Henry.

Helping Deven is Henry’s brother, Antony. Antony is antagonistic towards Deven and the faeries in general, but he wants to see justice done by his brother.

Part of the story is concerned with the murder, but the larger part of the story is about the fate of Deven and the faerie court. In the time between the first book and this story, Deven has become an indispensable part of Lune’s court, even if they won’t want to admit it. And the words that Lune impulsively spoke at the end of the first book turn out to be more important than they realised – an heir to Deven must be found.

It was really fun to see Deven and Lune again, and I really love getting another glimpse of the Onyx Court. I have the feeling that this novella is supposed to lead me to the second book in the library, but if I ever come back to the series, I’m thinking of skipping to the third book, since that’s what the library has. I haven’t quite decided yet, so if anyone has read In Ashes Lie, let me know if it’s worth hunting down!

P.s. I’ll be working the late shift tomorrow and Saturday, so I probably won’t be able to post. At least I’ll be surrounded by tea!

  1. I have had Midnight Never Come on my TBR pile for quite a while and really need to get to it. I don’t know much about the series, admittedly. I enjoy novels about the fae.

    1. I enjoy them too! So far so good, but the huge gaps in time make me wonder about whether if I should continue. Hope you get to Midnight Never Come soon!

What do you think?
