When I heard about Kittea’s Christmas teas, I knew that I had to try them. So as soon as they arrived at teapasar @ Nomadx, I bought one tin of each flavour. We had the Dayre Tea ParTEA the next day, so I brought them along for everyone to try as well.
The teas came in two cubes – the Merry Christmas cube consisting of the Peace and Joy blends, and the Season’s Greetings cube, consisting of the Love and Hope blends. Peace and Joy are actually last year’s blends, brought back by popular demand, while Love and Hope are new limited edition blends introduced this year!
Peace – Melon Peach Green Tea
This was easily the favourite of the Dayre Tea ParTEA. I thought that it had a very pleasant melon smell, although others say that the peach smell is more dominant. The smell isn’t as strong when brewed, but you can taste the fruity notes in the tea very clearly. I thought that it had a fantastic melon taste and managed to be flavourful without being overpowering (or overly sweet).
If you’re a fan of fruity teas, I think you’ll like this.
Joy – Caramel Cocoa Rooibos
I was actually a bit hesitant to try this because I haven’t had the best experience with chocolatey teas.
When I opened the tin, there was a distinct chocolatey and nutty smell that reminded me of hazelnut. It actually reminded me a lot of Nutella. When I tasted it, the nutty notes were dominant and I didn’t actually taste any of the rooibos. It was like a hot chocolate without the viscosity of chocolate. I was surprised by how much I enjoyed it, given that chocolate blends aren’t normally to my liking.
Love – Fruit Orchard Black Tea
Love is basically a tea filled with all the fruits you can find in orchards, along with blue cornflowers, pink cornflowers, and yellow mallow flowers. It’s a brightly coloured tea and it smells a lot like candy. To be honest, I can’t decide if the fragrance reminds me of the Li Hua Mao or the Kitticorn.
The tea liquor has the same fruity fragrance and taste. It’s fairly sweet from all the fruits, but it’s a natural kind of sweetness. The aftertaste of the tea was pretty strong so the fruity notes lingered pleasantly in my mouth. This was a delicious tea and I can see myself enjoying this as it is or with a scone or other snack.
Hope – Lavender Camomile
Hope is the first Kittea formulated specifically to aid sleep. Apart from the chamomile and lavender, it also has straw oat flowers, and this blend is supposed to help you relax and prepare for sleep.
The dry tea smelled like lavender – which is natural because I saw a lot of that in the loose leaf – and the tea liquor smells like a mix of lavender, chamomile, and something new. I think it’s the oat flower? To me, this blend was a bit sweeter that most chamomile lavender blends and it will definitely appeal to people who want something fragrant and soothing before bed. Personally, my favourite chamomile and lavender blend is still the one from the English Tea Shop as it strikes the right balance between chamomile and lavender for me*, but I will happily drink this before bed.
For the record, I slept pretty well the night I tried this.
Overall, I really enjoyed all four of these blends and I’m very glad that I managed to get my hands on them before they were sold out. My favourites are definitely Peace and Love because these blends manage to be flavourful without being overpowering.
*NOTE: for me, I like something slightly less fragrant just before bed. The mulberry tea from Kagoshima is the one that I’ve been drinking for the past few years, and since it has a more subdued and ‘neutral’ flavour, I grew used to drinking that. If you’re the type that likes something aromatic, you’ll definitely love this. It’s really a preference thing.
Oh I love the sound of these!! Peace and love sound great!
Those are delicious!! It’s a pity that Kittea is available mainly in Singapore – I’d love for more people to be able to try her teas! (I think she does ship overseas, but she mainly sells here)
