Book Review: Don’t Tell Teacher by Suzy K. Quinn

This book was recommended to me by one of my friends, who messaged me after she saw my review of The Wife Stalker (I honestly love conversations that are sparked by books!). To give you my opinions ahead of time, Don’t Tell Teacher is a nail-biting and fast-paced story with twists that pack a punch!

Don’t Tell Teacher starts with Lizzie and Tom beginning life in a new town. Lizzie’s been told that Tom is lucky to get into the school he is, but when he comes home dazed, with bruises and suspicious marks, and an inability to talk about what’s going on in school, Lizzie’s alarm-bells are raised. But since she and Tom are hiding from her abusive acts, there’s not much she can do… can she?

While there are a few POV characters in the novel, the two main POV characters are Lizzie and Kate (Lizzie and Tom’s social worker). I have to say, I’m so glad that there’s Kate because without her, the twist in the story would have been really unfair. I can’t say much because I don’t want to spoil the story, but I definitely went into the book thinking I was going to uncover something and was thoroughly misled.

I mentioned that the twist here packs a punch. I have to say, though, that I am slightly less convinced of this here than I was in The Wife Stalker. I think it’s because one narrator became far too unreliable, whereas in The Wife Stalker I could look back and see that yeah, we’ve got two somewhat unreliable narrators but I can see where she’s deluding herself (and the twist came more from a lack of info rather than intentional lying, though there was some lying in both books by certain characters).

If you liked The Wife Stalker, I think you’ll definitely like this. It’s a fast-paced take with lots of twists, although I have to warn you, the ending will definitely break your heart, especially if you love children.

    1. It is! Just beware if child abuse upsets you – the twist kind of depends on that (I mean, you can tell something bad is going on from the start) so it can get really upsetting.

What do you think?
