August 2024 in Review

Hello friends! We’re now in September, which means that it’s going to be quite hectic from here up till the end of the year because I’ll be going overseas to attend two weddings. But that’s the future and this post is for the past so let’s look back at August.

August in Books

August was a decent enough reading month – I finished 9 books (though I’m very behind on my book journal, which means there are books that I’ve read but not written notes or reviews for!) and three were folklore-related for the folklore series that I’ve been talking about! And yes, all the reviews are finally posted, in the order of: internet folklore -> nonfiction folklore -> fiction -> folktales -> original pieces. It’s an order that made sense in my brain and I hope it made sense to you as you were reading it.

I also finished another Japanese book this month: 薬屋のひとりごと4 which means I have one more book to go before I finish the books I bought in Okinawa. I’m hoping to finish the fifth book this month so I can buy more books in Japan to continue practicing reading in Japanese!

I still have not finished “I Am A Cat” which I mentioned last month. Too many books kept jumping the queue!

Crochet Updates

There isn’t much to update in terms of crochet – I’m pretty much still working on the same project, although I can share a sneak peak with you here:

This is essentially one panel of the bag and I still have to put everything together, which I consider the most fiddly and time-consuming part of the project! Fingers crossed I finish this in September because I would LOVE to bring this back with me overseas (assuming it fits my phone)

Other Updates

Finally, my substack is officially open. I’ve been toying with this for a while, but the combined factors of:

  1. Having to log in to Mailchimp and realising everything has changed (and also, I will soon not be able to use the free tier)
  2. Substack starting posting on mobile

has pushed me to being slightly more active there. The idea is that this will be for those times where I have the motivation to write – but only on my phone (so probably more like event recaps like checking out the latest events at the library, where I can import photos rather than having to transfer them to my computer to upload to WordPress). At the moment, the publishing pace is between 0 to 3 times a week, so it’s definitely more frequent than the monthly newsletters that I used to send.

Now, I just have to get around to telling all the newsletter subscribers this and then removing all the links in my books (it’s the latter that feels like a herculean task which is why I’ve not carried out the former!).
