Even though I’ve only read a few works of Russian literature (mostly the most well-known of Tolstoy and Dostoevsky’s novels), I thought The Possessed sounded interesting and that I might learn a little about Russian literature. What I didn’t expect was to be so entertained throughout this account of Batuman’s gradute years studying Russian literature.… Read More The Possessed by Elif Batuman
This book intrigued me the moment I saw it. I’m not a huge self-help fan, but I have defended the genre before (link to Dayre post, although I might have to republish that here since Dayre is going to be gated soon). So I was interested in seeing what this book, where someone actually tries… Read More Practically Perfect in Every Way by Jennifer Niesslein
I got this book while attending a course on the teacher as a mentor for my Church’s Sunday School. The speaker there made a good point that kids nowadays can get any information they want from the internet; what they really need is to have someone they trust who can guide them. In this way,… Read More Spiritual Mentoring by Keith R. Anderson & Randy D. Reese
Like everyone else, I’ve taken the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator a couple of times. However, I have noticed that my indicator has changed every time I take it – I’ve always thought that the results depend on my mood at the moment, but reading this has made me realise that my way of thinking is different… Read More The Personality Brokers by Merve Emre
About six years ago, I read a book on TED Talks called – How to Deliver a TED Talk. Needless to say, I’ve forgotten most of that, which is why I thought it would be good to get a book on TED talks. I’m definitely not a naturally good public speaker, but I do have… Read More TED Talks by Chris Anderson
When I was in Secondary school, I went through a period where I binged lots of true crime books. Even though I don’t read as much of the genre now, I still enjoy them. Unlike many true crime mysteries, which focus on famous cases, Pretty Jane and the Viper of Kidbrooke Lane is about the… Read More Pretty Jane and the Viper of Kidbrooke Lane by Paul Thomas Murphy
I had this while reading the unabridged version of The Tale of Genji and it was honestly a lifesaver! I’m so glad I managed to find a copy of this and The Tale of Genji at the same time. The Reader’s Guide can be broken into three parts: Part 1 is titled The World of… Read More The Tale of Genji: A Reader’s Guide by William J. Puette
Overwhelmed is one of those books that I came across by accident. I was visiting the new library@haborfront when I saw this being displayed. I’ve been feeling tired lately and the thought that it might because of I’m overwhelmed rather than being in a depressive state was a nice one (jury’s still out on which… Read More Overwhelmed by Brigid Schulte
I heard about this book from a recent episode of The Indicator and it sounded interesting enough that I went out and immediately borrowed it. Although I’ve been a bit skeptical of personal finance books since reading Pound Foolish, the advice here is pretty different. First though, let me tell you who I think this… Read More The Dumb Things Smart People Do With Their Money by Jill Schlesinger
As you might have guessed, this is a book I borrowed in preparation for the upcoming family trip. I haven’t been to Scotland before and it’s not a country I know a lot about so I thought I’d start by reading about their national dress. Scottish Tartan and Highland Dress is a pretty tiny book… Read More Scottish Tartan and Highland Dress by Fiona MacDonald
