We’re almost one-third of the way through! Today was a fairly good reading day because I decided to bake bread and basically just read while the bread was baking. I find bread to be rather tricky, so I’m glad that this one went well! It’s actually pretty easy to make and I can see myself baking this again.
Today, I read:
Five Go Off in a Caravan and Five on Kirrin Island Again by Enid Blyton – It’s always fun going back to Enid Blyton. In Five Go Off in the Caravan, my attention was caught by Nobby, the circus boy. Even though the five don’t actually notice, it’s quite clear that Nobby is considered a different class from them – as seen when he calls them posh and through the farmer’s wife’s opinion of them (she thinks they steal her chickens).
Five on Kirrin Island was actually my favourite of the three mysteries. It was fun and we get to see Kirrin Island again. Plus, I actually enjoy the stories with Uncle Quentin – he’s probably not the children’s favourite but I think him and Aunt Fanny’s dynamic is very adorable. Plus, here we get to see him at his best as he works on an invention for the good of mankind (if only it were true! No more reliance on coal!)
Apart from the Famous Five series, I also read Newsletter Ninja by Tammi Labrecque. I sent out my monthly newsletter last week, and it reminded me that I probably have things that can be improved on. So I’m slowly going through it again and I’ve marked out things that I want to do (hopefully within the year), and so far it’s mostly about the welcome automation.
I’ve also read another two chapters of The Tale of Genji by Murasaki Shikibu. So now we know that Genji is probably a pedophile (I mean, he spins it as this karmic bond between him and Murasaki, but the girl is ten and even her guardians don’t think Genji has the best intentions). That said, Murasaki is brilliant at making her characters come to life, so while I don’t like Genji, I’m still going to press on.
My youngest sister, when growing up, loved the „Famous Five“ series so much that she called her own dog Timmy, too. He really did look exactly like the Timmy from the books, though, so she did have a point!
That’s so cool! I’m sure your Timmy was just as intelligent too!
According to my dad and my sister, he was. 😀
Reading about the Famous Five series gave me serious nostalgia! All the names just brought up such happy memories! Also, I baked bread just once so far an it IS tricky! I’ll try again and hope for better results! 😂
New bread + the Famous Five is an oddly nostalgic combination hahaha
I am glad your bread turned out well! We’ve only made bread a couple of times, but were happy with the results. I hope you continue to enjoy your reading!
Thank you! I’m glad your bread turned out well too!
I can’t remember if I read the Famous Five books. I’ll see if I can get my hands on them to read.
Again, I can’t thank you enough for mentioning that blog all about Blyton’s books. It helped me to remember a few books from my childhood that I loved. I’ve been struggling to remember the titles. Now, the problem will be to see if I can find the editions I read.
No problem! I spent a really long time on that blog these past two days too!
Apart from Famous Five, I also like the Secret series and the first book convinced me that all I wanted to do was live on an abandoned island and sleep on heather!
🤣🤣 lol in that case, you’ll love this Buzzfeed article. I remember being fascinated by fairy creatures, brownies and pixies. These books are really what got me hooked on fantasy.

Loving the Famous Five re-read!! (and I’m so sorry that I’m so far behind on posts, I promise I’m catching up!)
Take your time on posts! I’m so far behind on videos I don’t know when I’m catching up!
Don’t even talk about videos haha, it’s a never ending cycle!
