I had a really good time rereading Just Listen so I decided to reread The Truth About Forever, which is the first Dessen book that I read and probably my favourite book of hers to date.
Why?
Because the first chapter brings me to the verge of tears every time I read it.
The Truth About Forever is a novel about grief and moving past it. At the start of summer, Macy thinks she has her grief under control – her boyfriend Jason is making her into a better person, she’s studying hard, and she doesn’t talk about her feelings with her mum. But after a very chaotic dinner party, Macy starts working at Wish catering, her relationship is put on hold, and her sister starts to renovate the family beach house, forcing Macy to come face to face with her feelings.
I wrote in my first review of my book that I really liked the relationships here, both the romantic one and the friendships, and that holds true even today. One thing I appreciated was how Macy slowly broke out of the shell she created while grieving and how her friendships deepened as she learned how to be more vulnerable with her emotions.
The ending of the book is a little too happy to be realistic, but honestly after all Macy and her family has been through, I’m glad that this was their ending for now.
Honestly, I don’t have much to say about this book this time, except that if you’ve not read a Sarah Dessen novel, this is the one I would recommend because it is definitely my favourite.
I think Dessen endings are always too happy to be realistic and that’s part of the charm!
That’s true!! They are truly comfort reads!
